According to the poll analysis last week, "What Helps You Decide Which Site to Use for Online Shopping?", there are 5 answers given to the respondents which is "same site I buy regularly", "search engine", "personal recommendation", "online advertising" and "same store buy from offline". There are 40% of respondents choose "Same Site I Buy Regularly" while 60% of respondents choose "Personal Recommendation". The rest of the answers are not chosen by the respondents.

2 respondents choose "Same Site I Buy Regularly" because they have confidence. They will be come more confident on the websites they usually visit and make purchase. They feel secure on the terms and conditions of the sites they usually shop. They are familiar with the ordering and payment method of the sites they shop.

There are 3 respondents choose "Personal Recommendation" mainly because they recommended by friends and others. They will be more confident and think positively on the websites that recommended by their friends and family. Recommendations from the people who close with are more secure.

The "search engine", "online advertising" and "same store buy from offline" are not chosen by the respondents. Consumer will think that they are unsafe and they are not familiar with these websites will make them in trouble. They will not try something that they are not familiar with.

Besides that, you're unnecessary to done your shopping before 10pm, or squeezing with the crowd during weekends which happened in shopping malls. Hello, everyone! Today, we are going to talk about the background of online shopping. First of all, there are a lot of people may not know, the Internet began as a military, that is, only the military personnel can used it. Until year 1989, the Internet was officially released to all people to use. Since then, only people gradually aware of internet, and become more common. In year 1990, the first Internet server and browser were set up.

After this, the first online bookstore was appeared in the earth! If you think it is the famous Amazon bookstore, then it would be a serious mistake! It was a now little-known name, because it has unfortunately failed. However, where a walk will leave marks, it is the true ancestor of online bookstores! For your information, the name of this bookstore called the Book Stacks Unlimited. It started with the original idea to offer every book ever published to everyone in an easily accessible way begins in year 1992. But, eventually it failed. This provides a good opportunity for other companies to share this wonderful concept.

The release of the first online bookstore did not sweep the globe. Instead, there was a leader quietly led to this trend. Have a guess, who is the leader? It is not eBay; it is not Amazon bookstore; it is, Pizza Hut! Get it correct? Whether right or wrong, give a big applause for yourself! Here, for your information, Pizza Hut is the first national chain to offer online ordering with the option of home delivery. In 1994, Santa Cruz, California Pizza Hut restaurant becomes their restaurant of white rat to test whether the concept will be successful.

Then, the widely known Amazon bookstore was launched in year 1995. Originally, it was created to have the same concept with Book Stacks Unlimited. But due to consumers are more towards to products which are other than books, smart Amazon.com provides many other products in order to fulfill their huge demand.

Finally, the finale on stage is the most famous online shopping website, the world's largest Internet marketplace --- eBay! Heroes do not ask origin based on the truth, thus, it should be very few people who know the father of eBay? Actually, in September 1995, Pierre Omidyar San Jose coded this online auction house website. At that time, there was only a computer which was in his living room and whole stacks of programming code in his mind to be with him. Three years later, eBay was launched in the market. And this founder, Pierre Omidyar San Jose then, as we think, has become a billionaire!

Until now, there are countless online shopping websites and the items to be sold are more than what we can imagine. To classify them, there would be including beauty, perfume, books, clothes, shoes, jewelry, toys, music, electronics, and so on.

As we know, online shopping will bring disadvantages to us.

The first cons is the item spoilt and changed in what we have order through the e-boutique. This is a main problem that everyone know about it. Due to the reason they cannot check through the merchandise on the spot during the purchasing. Thus when they receive the product in a bad condition, the seller will point a finger to the delivery person and do not make any compensation to the buyer.

The second cons of online shopping is problem of security on the transaction of money. We just don't trusted on those e-boutique and not to mention transferring of money to them. Furthermore, we can get the product in 1 week time or more than that after the transaction of money.

The third cons of online shopping is the slow down of Internet connection. User need time for loading into a website. Buyer want to purchase things online just because they are busy with their current things and may want purchase online. Online shopping may also cover just part of consumer because it need at least a computer and Internet. Thus, it may not cover the older age market.

Today, we are going to continue on secure online shopping topic. Besides log into secure online sites, credit card usage, and password issues, there are more secure or safety methods when purchse online.

Human always make mistakes. Thus, we need to double check the online form after typing in the amount of order. People may type in “11” instead of “1”. There are many online forms that will tell buyers the total price and amount of order. So, buyers are strongly recommended to check the items, quantities, and prices before confirming the order. Then, please check any confirmation e-mail that sent by seller. If there is any problem, notify the seller immediately.

Besides that, people may regret on what they have ordered. Some online shopping websites allow buyers to cancel orders but some not. For some websites, buyers can cancel the orders in a short period of time. However, if buyers did not act within that period of time, the order cannot be cancel. In this case, buyers are suggested to read the policy on “return” and react to it.

Then, buyers should keep a record on the orders made. Print and file a copy of the order form or confirmation letter in case you have a problem with it. The order form or confirmation form must indicate the items, quantities, prices, shipping costs, or even dates of delivery. By law, online businesses must deliver merchandise within 30 days of purchase or should notify you if there will be a delay.

Lastly, please remember that precautions are very important when you made online purchase. Just to tell you that “The Federal Trade Commission received 221,226 Internet fraud complaints in 2007” and we believe that there are more cases. We do know that why online shopping still not popular in Malaysia. The reason is due to shoppers may not believe in the online shopping protection. How do we do so we will be shop online safely? Thus I am here to tell you how to do secure online shopping.

We must always log into the secure online sites. This mean that you have to log in https:// with the URL and not http:// with URL when log in. The URL with secure will be more safety to use compare to the URL which do not have secure. Shoppers have to be more caution of any "security" warnings that may come up when making an online purchase. Please make sure read them twice and don't just simply click "OK".

Besides that, there is a safety credit card usage instead of debit cards. This is simply because credit cards come with additional protection. Shoppers may use the low-limit credit card to limit the amount of damage someone can do if that card is compromised. Shopper smay just consider getting a credit card to use just for online purpose. They have to be alert and report any fraudulent purchases or suspicious activities on credit card to bank immediately.

When entering any website, shoppers have to use different password or PIN code. They have to memorize them and make sure change them regularly. Create unique password that are difficult to guess. For an example, password that with the combination of letters and numbers. Shoppers have to read the policy carefully and ensure that the personal information will not be disclosed to anybody.

Week 4 Poll Analysis - Action Towards Insecure Online Shopping

According to the poll question last week, "What action would you take when found the sites you visit are insecure?", there are 5 answers given to the respondents, however only 3 answers are chosen by them. 50% of them said that "Never try online shopping anymore." 25% of respondents answered that "Don't know what action to take" and "It's OK, not a big deal" respectively.

Insecure online shopping resulted in online shoppers consider to quit this trend as their confidence lost. They feel unsure which sites are secure to shop and how to protect their privacy issues online especially for those who are new and not familiar towards online shopping and computer. They rather to remain the traditional shopping trend in real stores and shopping malls as they can observe and judge themselves. More importantly, shoppers able to communicate with the owner or seller face-to-face. If they have any enquiries, they can immediately ask the person in charged.

Some online shoppers do not care about the sites they are visit are insecure. This might due to the reason of they have predicted such thing will happened through Internet network. They usually take them as unfortunate experiences, but they will continue to shop online due to they believe there are a lot more secure e-shops out there. They are willing to give themselves chances to try out other sites. Besides that, they do not concern much about insecure issues due to they feel troublesome and do not have leisure to solve them.

However, some online shoppers who visited the insecure e-shops, feel unsatisfied and want to do make complaints, but they are helpless on what action should be taken, hence they leave it with disappointment. Online shoppers who are lack of knowledge and information on online security issues might because of they seldom approach to the news and Internet network that they are not familiar with.

As continue of the previous post, online shopping consists of few more disadvantages. We all do know that online shopping may cause purchaser a main problem is the items spoilt and changed in what they have order through the e-boutique. This is the common problem face by most of the buyers all the time. Due to the reason buyer cannot check through the merchandise on the spot during the purchasing, therefore when they receive the product if in a bad condition they just cannot do anything because the seller will argue that it was in good condition when they packed in. They will point a finger to the delivery person and do not make any compensation to the buyer.

Besides that, the main problem that most of the people do not purchase online is the problem of security on the transaction of money. We just don't trusted on those e-boutique and not to mention transferring of money to them. Moreover, we will get the product after the transferring of money in at least three days or a week. Thus, we just don't trust on the online transferring process and yet the transferring may not receive by the seller.

Another disadvantages may be the slow down of Internet connection. Why do I say so? Simply because user will spent a lot of time wait for the loading of online website. This slow down of connection will cause user to spent a lot of time and we know that buyer want to shop online just because they do not have much time and busy with their current things. As our previous post was stated out why people nowadays like to do online shopping simply because they are busy and online shopping will not take many of their time as they do shopping at the traditional retail outlet. As we know online shopping will need user to have a computer and the availability to access the Internet. Thus, it still do not reach the older age of consumer and reach a limited of affordable range of consumer.

Everything has two sides, positive and negative. Pros of online shopping are considerable, but still there are some cons that frustrating you and might be the main reason for some shoppers remain the traditional shopping in real stores and malls. Here I'm going to discuss some disadvantages of online shopping with you.

From the response of the participants in last week poll, most of them faced the barrier of items used and low quality. How come it happened? It might probably due to the owner of e-shop is unprofessional. Perhaps you are not believe, but can you imagine those owner who are really unprofessional sold the clothes they worn? More importantly the shoppers who make order would not know at all due to owner mislead shoppers by using the attractive pictures and stated how good quality was the product such as "stainless" or "leather", but then ended up with different thing when receive it. It doesn't matter if the owner wants to earn side profit and avoid wasting their items, as long as the items are still in good and acceptable condition, and listed in the product's information to inform shoppers. Somehow the unprofessional owner will just ignore these and while shoppers received their product, disappointment occurred as the color has faded away and low quality material of the product.

Besides that, oversize problem always there! Why? Simple! You do not see the item being sold personally. You are restricted to try on the products and see the true size of them. Plus, model pictures could be the issue, the picture might be edited in the standard size in order to look nice and amazing to attract shoppers' attention although it's not true, in addition the measurement that owner showed to the shoppers might not accurate. One more issue is the owner listed few sizes for shoppers, but ended up with only one size. Shoppers are upset as they think they will look nice with that product but the other way round when try on the received product. Try on yourself always better than making unsure judgement!

Moreover, you do not get the instant gratification while shop online. This is because of you couldn't use or wear the item right away and have to wait! 3 days, 1 week, or possibly several weeks due to failure of arrive at your home on time. This wait can be accompanied by shipping costs, which equates to basically paying to wait for your purchase. Other than that, you can't guarantee whether the owner really deliver the items to you later on and you have to bear a risk to lost in money and get nothing! How terrible is that? Now, are you rather to shop at real stores to achieve your higher satisfaction?

3rd Week Poll Analysis - What is Your Bad Experience of Online Shopping?

This diagram shows the result of the past experience of online shopping. From the results, we can see that half of the respondents received used and low quality products. Can you imagine when you purchased a brand new product but you received the used one. However, this is out of the topic.

Besides used and low quality products, 16% of the respondents experienced over size problem. For example, a shirt or a pair of shoes. I know, this situation is very annoying where you bought something but not fulfilling your needs.

Then, 17% of the respondents do received a damage or spoilt product. This may due to the delivering process or the the manufacture side. What will you do if you purchased an expensive product but it was damaged when you received it? Will you report to the seller or just keep quiet?

Aanother 17% falls to "items do not arrive on time". Sometimes, the seller will mention that products will be on your door step within one week or one month. However, after a period of time, the product still has not reach your place. For beginners, do not be too worry because nowadays the system and quality control are quite good. Lastly, no one selects the answer of "Bad Customer Service" and "Others".

In conclusion, purchase items from the sites that can be trusted, such as a site that your friends introduced. Moreover, do response the problem that you met to the seller. Even though the seller may not reply but still, voice out is better than keeping it.

For example, if you are interested in two e-shops that you have searched, you can compare their products as in their prices and features to make the best purchase decision with low effort. Imagine that you don't need to walk through all the shops in shopping mall to compare the products, but only sit at home with few clicks of mouse, isn't it sounds good? In addition, online shoppers able to search for their favourite categories of products easily due to the online merchants have categorized specifically in website for visitors, instead of lost in the shopping mall and confuse about which shops provide you exactly items you want.

Consumers' reviews plays an important role as references for online shoppers. Online shoppers able to read other consumer's reviews and experiences regarding product or retailer, and make judgement before making purchase decision. It assists online shoppers to think twice and make wise decision. Talking about the shopping mall, there has limited sources for you to refer on before purchasing except the sales person and your shopping partner. But how much you can guarantee that their comments and suggestions are reliable enough? Probably the sales person use to persuade you to purchase their products simply due to they want to hit sales! Your shopping partner probably don't have the experience towards the product, hence their comments are not accurate! In short, their comments are not that reliable and sufficient. There are uncountable consumers from the global to share experiences on millions of products and services online everyday through forum, website, blog, or consumer reviews application, hence I believe that online shoppers more or less would able to obtain credible sources and make wise decision!

Regarding the answer of more diverse choices didn't vote by any respondents, I think most of them haven fully explore how amazing was the trend of online shopping. Online shopping provides you various choices of product to achieve your maximum satisfaction. This may due to the reason of online merchants choose their products from many different inventory, shopkeeper, distributor and manufacturer. Besides that, most of the e-shops are not only confined to local shoppers, but global. Hence, wide variety of products are provided to satisfy different kind of online shoppers. Online shoppers obtain the enjoyment of wide variety of their favourite products through this beneficial advantage.

People may ask, why so many people like to shop online? There are many advantages that you may like to know. Here, I will introduce some advantages of online shopping.

Among all the good characteristics, the main advantage is you can be more comfortable when you shop online. You can lie down on your sofa and search for a product. No need to think for the dress code and walk in the shopping mall for the whole day.

Secondly, the products are usually cheaper than the seller. This is because they can save on the costs of renting a store, salespersons, insurances, and other costs that are needed to run a business in the real world. They may just trade in the products and store them at home.

Thirdly, online shopping is very convenient. You can easily compare the prices as many sites as you want. You can also buy as many things as you want without worrying how to carry those products because what you purchased will send to your doorstep in a short period of time. Furthermore, you are able to purchase products that are not available locally without stepping out from your house. Cool, right?

You do not have to deal with the weather and time too! You can buy anything from the website whenever you want. No matter it was early morning or late night. No matter it was raining or hot sunny day. Internet is open 24 hours a day, and 365 days a year, just like 7-11, always there for you.
